Singapore Polytechnic, the first polytechnic established in Singapore, was founded in 1954. The former campus was originally located at Prince Edward Road. In 1978, it was relocated to its present-day location at Dover next to Dover MRT Station.
Singapore Polytechnic offers 49 full-time diploma courses and a wide range of continuing education programmes. It has nine academic schools and two academic departments:
School of Architecture and the Built Environment (ABE)
Prior to 2009, this school went by the name of the School of the Built Environment. The School of Architecture and the Built Environment comprises the divisions of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering.
The School offers the following six full-time diploma courses:

  • Diploma in Architecture (DARCH)
  • Diploma in Civil Engineering with Business (DCEB)
  • Diploma in Environmental Management and Water Technology (DEWT)
  • Diploma in Integrated Events and Project Management (DEPM)
  • Diploma in Landscape Architecture (DLA)
  • Diploma in Hotel and Leisure Facilities Management (DHLFM)

The National University of Singapore is Singapore's oldest university. It is the largest university in the country in terms of student enrollment and curriculum offered.

The university's main campus is located in southwest Singapore at Kent Ridge, with an area of approximately 1.5 km² (0.6 square miles). The Bukit Timah campus houses the law faculty, while the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore is located at the Outram campus.

The former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has recently named NUS as the headquarters of his Asian Faith and Globalization Initiative together with Durham University in the UK and Yale University in the USA to deliver an exclusive programme in partnership with Tony Blair Faith Foundation.
The university is considered to be one of the most prestigious universities in Asia.In 2010, the Times Higher Education ranked the university the 34th in the world and 4th in Asia.

NUS has a semester-based modular system for conducting courses. It adopts features of the British system, such as small group teaching (tutorials) and the American system (course credits). Students may transfer between courses within their first two semesters, enroll in cross-faculty modules or take up electives from different faculties. Other cross-disciplinary initiatives study programmes include double-degree undergraduate degrees in Arts & Social Sciences and Engineering; Arts & Social Sciences and Law; Business and Engineering; and Business and Law.

NUS offers 27 single-degree undergraduate and 115 masters, doctoral and graduate diploma programmes conducted by 13 faculties.


Nanyang Technological University (Abbreviation: NTU) is a research university in Singapore. The university's main 200-hectare garden campus, known as the Yunnan Garden campus, is in the south-western part of the island. It houses Singapore's largest on-campus residence infrastructure including 16 halls of residence for undergraduates and a graduate hall. In 2010 QS World University Rankings ranked the university 74th overall in the world, having been ranked joint 73rd in the 2009 THE-QS World University Rankings (in 2010 Times Higher Education World University Rankings and QS World University Rankings parted ways to produce separate rankings). NTU was ranked 174th place (out of 200) in 2010 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. NTU was the Olympic Village for the first-ever Youth Olympic Games in 2010. It is a founding member of Global Alliance of Technological Universities.

NTU has four colleges, comprising 12 schools. The College of Engineering, with six schools focused on technology innovation, enjoys wide renown and ranks fourth in the world in engineering publications. The College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences has Singapore's first professional art school, the Humanities and Social Science School, and the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information. The school is named after the late Dr Wee Kim Wee, a former President of Singapore who was a journalist and diplomat.
